Joshua Omaru Marley, professionally known as YG Marley, is an American singer and songwriter born on December 5, 2001, in Beverly Hills, California. He is the son of acclaimed rapper and singer Lauryn Hill and former CFL football player Rohan Marley, making him the grandson of reggae icon Bob Marley. Growing up in South Orange, New Jersey, YG was immersed in a rich musical environment, often joining his mother on stage during her performances.

YG Marley’s musical career began in earnest in 2013 when he started performing original material during his mother’s concerts. His breakthrough came with the release of his debut single, “Praise Jah in the Moonlight,” on December 27, 2023. The song, co-written and produced with Lauryn Hill, samples Bob Marley’s 1978 track “Crisis” and quickly gained international acclaim. It topped Spotify’s Viral 50 charts in the U.S. and globally, reached number one in New Zealand, and entered the top five in the UK.

Following this success, YG released “Survival” in May 2024, which samples his grandfather’s “Ambush in the Night.” He performed the song alongside his mother on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” In October 2024, he collaborated with Nigerian artist Davido on the single “Awuke,” further showcasing his versatility and global appeal.
