In fact, every woman you know can probably recall an instance or fifteen when her outfit was cited as the supposed cause of a problem, whether it was that her V-neck T-shirt was too distracting to fellow teen boys, or that a pair of shorts gave away the fact that she owned a pair of legs the nerve!

BY now, most high school dress codes have just about done away with the guesswork. Girls: no midriff-baring blouses, stiletto heels, miniskirts. Boys: no sagging pants, muscle shirts. But do the math. If the skirt is an acceptable length, can a boy wear it? Can a girl attend her prom in a tuxedo?

But as it is becoming more common to do so, these students didn't simply grumble among themselves about the rules - they decided to do something about it, organizing a protest in which of them wore scarlet letter A's on their chest and proclaimed that they are 'Not A Distraction'. Puritanical rules: The A's they wore referenced Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, in which the protagonist wore an A after committing adultery. Strenght in numbers: students participated, including a few boys; some faculty even joined in. The magnet school put new rules into effect last week, which saw harsher enforcement of their already-in-place dress code.
