On a road trip across the island, music is everywhere and each region moves to its own defining rhythm. So I asked Claudio if 10 meant 10, or if it actually meant midnight. Within seconds, we were enveloped by sound — bongos, scrapers, shakers, trumpets, sax and the falsetto of the singer, who goes by the name Cimafunk. The enthralled crowd of hundreds danced into the morning with their arms in the air; they seemed to know most of the words. It was a magical moment, and one that the photographer Todd Heisler and I had been chasing on our trip across the island. You hear it everywhere, emanating from bars or homes or religious ceremonies.

Is topless sunbathing accepted in Cuba?? I certainly hope so!!! Though I will keep it in the more private beach, if no children are around! I've seen many women go topless at the beach of every resort I have been to. There were always a few when I was there. I heard Varadero is the only place it is permitted but whether that's right or not I don't know. I've been to the NH Kristal, back when it was still the El Senador, but I don't remember seeing any topless women there.

Aside from being a far better photographer than me, my brother traveled with a Cuban-American friend and his family, so he had even cooler adventures cooler than wrecking plumbing? All photos are from Havana. I waken to a pale face in half-light.
