Split Enz feat. Swingers - Counting the Beat Lyrics
They were unique, and in the middle of that extravagant mess stood one Philip Judd. Judd left that band for a spell in , and again, for good, in After a time spent kicking around New Zealand producing and playing with various bands, including Aukland punk pioneers Suburban Reptiles and a project with lo-fi kiwi psych champ Chris Knox, Judd formed The Swingers with two fellow Suburban Reptiles refugees, drummer Buster Stiggs replaced later by Ian Gilroy and future Midnight Oil bassist Bones Hillman. Forsaking the artiness Judd had brought to bear on Enz, The Swingers favored a tight, hooky new-wave popcraft, upbeat yet seriously anxiety-ridden, not at all out of place in its time but amazingly durable in retrospect.
The noisy library of New Zealand music. Unheard of. More than 30 years later, it still seems wrong that the group faltered so quickly and subsequently came to such an undignified and ignominious end.
Its slight over-use in TV commercials has perhaps lessened some of Counting the Beat's origi-nal impact, but there's no denying it's a great pop song. Written by one-time Split Enz star Phil Judd for his band the Swingers, the song was released in , as was the memorable music video. Clever cinematography, freestyle dance moves, and a quirky sense of humour place this clip ahead of its time.
