The purpose of this literature review is to examine the research concerning the hookup culture and its effect on gender identity. Gender identity, as defined by the American Psychological Association , refers to an individual 's sense of self by identifying as male, female, or transgender. When females hook up or have one-night stands, such conduct is frowned upon. Females who hook up or participate in the booty calls generally have lower self-esteem.

Hooking up the ambiguous term characterizing anything from kissing to sexual intercourse and everything in betweenhas become a fixation amongst teenagers and young adults nationwide. Specifically, it occurs between people who are not engaged in any bound relationship. The practice of hooking up reflects an evolution of sexual-social scripts as people have asserted their independence through uncommitted sex as early as the Sexual Revolution of the s. Ultimately, uncommitted intimate encounters have become increasingly normalized among American college students as sexual acts have dissociated from marriage and relationships in a cultural shift known formally as hookup culture.

Hook-up activities may include a wide range of sexual behaviors, such as kissing, oral sex, and penetrative intercourse. However, these encounters often transpire without any promise of, or desire for, a more traditional romantic relationship. A review of the literature suggests that these encounters are becoming increasingly normative among adolescents and young adults in North America, representing a marked shift in openness and acceptance of uncommitted sex. We reviewed the current literature on sexual hookups and considered the multiple forces influencing hookup culture, using examples from popular culture to place hooking up in context.
